This document describes how Dielectric Withstanding Voltage testing, also known as “High Potential” or “HiPot” testing, can affect Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) that are present in a system. It also describes how HiPot test results can be affected by SPDs, and provides reasons for disconnecting SPDs from electrical equipment and systems before conducting this type of testing.
When electrical equipment is manufactured; or when building power distribution systems are commissioned, maintained, modified, or repaired; electrical testing may be undertaken to verify condition and performance of the equipment or the system. This testing can include HiPot testing, which is undertaken ensure safety by confirming the integrity of wire and cable insulation and/or circuit isolation.
