How does an ATS function?
A
An ATS functions as a double-throw switch that connects one of two sources of power to a common load. It has interlocks which provide source to source isolation. The ATS is made up of two core components, a controller and a switching mechanism. The controller monitors both sources of power; if a loss is detected will start a generator and initiate a transfer sequence. When signaled by the controller, the switch mechanism will energize a coil which will move the switch to the alternate source. Once the primary source returns the controller transfers the switch back and shuts down the generator.

Is my generator compatible with an ASCO transfer switch, and where do I land my engine start connections?
A
ASCO 7000 SERIES transfer switches can accommodate any generator brand as long as it is has a 2 wire input engine start signal for automatic engine control. These input wires are connected to the engine start contacts of the transfer switch; which will turn the generator ON and OFF. The engine start contacts are also known as feature 7, which consists of a NC contact that de-energizes (closes) to send an engine start signal, and feature 8, which has of a NO contact that de-energizes (opens) to send an engine start signal. Refer to the switch wiring diagram for the terminal connections.

How do I communicate with the ATS?
A
The Group 5 controller can communicate via ASCOBusII (ASCO use only) or MODBUS protocol. To communicate with the ATS, you need the optional communication module (Acc.72EE2). This module supports Ethernet and RS-485 connection; which the customer can use to access data for external systems. This module also provides SNMP, email, and webserver capabilities. It serves as a gateway to other devices that will communicate with Group 5.
